Velma Veloria is a Temporary Lecturer (Part-time) in the Department of American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. A pioneering political and community leader, she is the first Asian American woman and first Filipina American elected to the Washington State Legislature (1992–2004). Her legislative legacy includes sponsoring House Bill 1175, which made Washington the first state to criminalize human trafficking.
Education:
- B.S. in Medical Technology, San Francisco State University
Research & Teaching: Focuses on gender in politics, labor movements, community organizing, environmental justice, and youth education. Co-taught courses on human trafficking and critical community organizing with Dr. Third Andresen, Dr. Connie So, and Dr. Sutapa Basu.
Community Work: 40+ years as a labor organizer (Cannery Workers Union Local 37, SEIU 1199NW) and advocate. Currently co-chair of the $40M Filipino Community Village capital campaign (affordable senior housing + youth innovation center) and chairs the King County International Airport Community Coalition for environmental justice.
