Professor Colin Bain serves as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Durham University and is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He joined Durham in 2005 after positions at Oxford University and has held significant leadership roles including Director (Science) of the Institute of Advanced Study, Dean, and Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research). Currently, he directs the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Soft Matter for Formulation and Industrial Innovation (SOFI 2).
His academic background includes a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Harvard University, followed by a Royal Society research fellowship at Christ’s College, Cambridge and a Lectureship at Magdalen College, Oxford University.
Professor Bain's research focuses on colloid and interface science—an interdisciplinary field bridging chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering—with particular emphasis on soft matter applications in industrial formulation. His work demonstrates strong cross-disciplinary integration and practical relevance to materials science.
His distinguished contributions have been recognized through major awards:
- Craig Lectureship from the Australian National University
- Founder’s Lecture at the National Chemical Laboratory in India
- Tilden Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry
- 2020 Sir Eric Rideal Award for lifetime contributions to colloid and interface science
In his strategic leadership role, he drives Durham University's Research and Engagement Strategy, supporting academic staff and research students in achieving internationally leading research impact. His directorship of the EPSRC-funded SOFI 2 CDT demonstrates significant grant leadership in doctoral training.
