Cody Corliss is an Associate Professor of Law at West Virginia University College of Law, where he teaches Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, International Law, International Criminal Law, and Domestic and International Terrorism. He joined the WVU Law faculty in 2022 after a distinguished career as a war crimes prosecutor at international tribunals.
Professor Corliss earned his J.D. from Cornell Law School (2009), his M.A. in history from Universiteit Leiden as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar (2006), and his A.B. in comparative religion from Harvard University (2003). He is admitted to practice law in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Corliss's research focuses on international criminal law, war crimes, and terrorism. His work examines the intersection of international prosecution mechanisms with domestic legal systems, cultural property protection during armed conflict, and the evolving nature of terror crimes in the digital age. His scholarship often draws from his firsthand experience working on high-profile international criminal cases.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on practical applications of international criminal law principles to contemporary challenges, particularly examining how international prosecutorial experience can inform domestic special counsel appointments and how digital technologies are transforming terrorism and its prosecution. His work bridges theoretical international law concepts with real-world prosecution challenges.
Before joining WVU, Professor Corliss served as a Legal Officer in the Office of the Prosecutor at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague. He was part of the trial team that secured the conviction of Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladić for genocide and crimes against humanity, and worked on the appellate team that upheld Radovan Karadžić's conviction. His practical experience in international criminal tribunals deeply informs his scholarly work and teaching approach.
