John Cencich is an adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in the Law of Armed Conflict and International Criminal Law. He is in phased retirement at Pennsylvania Western University. With a distinguished career in law enforcement, he served as the senior American War Crimes Investigator at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, leading one of the largest post-WWII international criminal investigations. He also represented an international NGO as a legal observer during U.S. Military Commission proceedings at Guantanamo Bay.
Dr. Cencich holds a Doctor of Juridical Science from the University of Notre Dame, alongside law degrees from the University of Kent (Canterbury) and the University of Pittsburgh. His advisory roles include the Pennsylvania Senate’s Advisory Committee on Wrongful Convictions and the Organized Crime Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
His research interests focus on international criminal law, war crimes investigations, legal methodologies in conflict zones, and organizational crime. He splits his time between Pittsburgh and Luray, Virginia.
