Dr. John Cencich is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Law, teaching the Law of Armed Conflict and International Criminal Law. He is in phased retirement from Pennsylvania Western University. Previously, he served as the senior American War Crimes Investigator for the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, leading one of the largest post-WWII international criminal investigations. His career included roles on the Pennsylvania Senate’s Advisory Committee on Wrongful Convictions and the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Organized Crime Committee. He recently represented an international NGO as a legal observer at Guantanamo Bay’s U.S. Military Commission proceedings.
Dr. Cencich holds law degrees from the University of Kent (Canterbury), the University of Pittsburgh, and a Doctor of Juridical Science from Notre Dame Law School. His expertise spans international criminal law, war crimes, organized crime, and legal systems. Though no specific grants or student advising roles are detailed, his advisory work with NGOs and governmental committees highlights his engagement with public policy and legal reform. He resides in Pittsburgh and Luray, Virginia.
