Claudia Ituarte-Lima is a Senior Researcher at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, affiliated with Lund University through the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). She specializes in Environmental Law and Human Rights Law, with two decades of expertise in biodiversity law, climate law, and environmental justice.
- Education: PhD from University College London and MPhil from the University of Cambridge.
Her research integrates legal analysis with sustainability science to address environmental and human rights governance challenges. She leads the DEFEND-BIO project, focusing on biosphere defenders and legal tools for sustainability transformations, and contributes to the EHRD project on environmental human rights defenders in Colombia.
Recent publications analyze the Escazu Agreement, biosphere defender frameworks, and intersections between international treaties like the Convention on Biological Diversity and UN climate accords. Her work spans Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Africa, emphasizing social-ecological systems and environmental democracy.
She has served as a regional deputy director for Latin America in the Global Network on Human Rights and Environment, advised the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment, and participated in IPBES expert groups. Collaborative projects include partnerships with Lund University, Linköping University, and FORMAS-funded initiatives.
