Juan Antonio Samper is a Doctoral student and Researcher at Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS), specializing in human rights with a focus on environmental governance, peace processes, and sustainable development. His work intersects with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action, peace, and justice.
His research interests center on Colombian political ecology, examining the relationship between peacebuilding processes and environmental human rights defenders. Samper's work explores how green deals and climate policies interact with territorial conflicts, particularly in the Colombian Andean-Amazon region. He investigates the tensions between state pacification efforts and environmental protection in post-conflict settings.
Samper's publications reveal a strong focus on the political dimensions of environmental governance, with particular attention to how international agreements like the Escazú Agreement impact environmental defenders in Latin America. His work bridges academic research and policy engagement, with several outputs directly informing regional action plans.
He actively participates in research networks and conferences at Lund University, including the Agenda 2030 Graduate School and Crisis Inequalities and Social Resilience (CISR) project. His collaborative approach is evident in co-authored works with scholars across disciplines and institutions.
