Clare Melhuish is a Professorial Research Fellow in the Anthropology of Built Environments at the UCL Urban Laboratory, part of The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London. She has held leadership roles including Head of Department (2018–2024) and Director of the UCL Urban Laboratory. Her research focuses on urban regeneration, postcolonial/decolonial urban contexts, and universities' roles in shaping cities. She co-leads courses like 'Histories of Global London' and contributes to the MASc Global Urbanism program.
Education includes a PhD in Social Anthropology from Brunel University (2008), an MA in Material Culture from UCL (2001), and a BA in History and History of Art from Christ’s College, Cambridge (1985). Prior academic roles include Visiting Research Fellowships at Brunel and the Open University, alongside a career as an architectural journalist and curator (1985–2005).
Her research spans urban heritage, digital visualization in architectural practice, and ethnographic evaluations of learning space design. The UCL Urban Laboratory’s Urban Room, launched in 2022, hosts public research activities linked to the UCL East campus in east London.
