Iain Borden is a Professor of Architecture and Urban Culture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL). He also serves as Vice-Dean Education for The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, following roles as Vice-Dean Communications (2010-2015) and Head/Director of the Bartlett School of Architecture (2001-2009). His academic positions span decades, including Reader, Director of Architectural History & Theory, and multiple leadership roles within UCL's built environment disciplines.
He holds a PhD from UCL (1999), an MA from the University of California, Los Angeles (1989), and a BA (Honours) from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1985). His research focuses on architectural history, urban culture, and interdisciplinary intersections between skateboarding, cinema, and automobile experiences. He specialises in how urban spaces evolve through use, advocating for adaptive spatial practices and public engagement.
His research interests include skateboarding’s sociocultural impact, urban design’s role in fostering community, and critical theory applied to architecture. He has advised on global architectural education and collaborated with over 50 journals/publishers. His current book project, *Construct*, explores large urban constructions like bridges and tunnels as experiential spaces.
Iain Borden is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Honorary Fellow of the RIBA. His work spans media appearances, curatorial projects, and international academic collaborations. He critiques urban environments through skateboarding’s performative practices and has pioneered studies on automobile interiors as public spaces.
In advising, he has guided architectural students and promoted interdisciplinary research. His grants and projects focus on skatepark heritage, urban mobility, and the cultural value of overlooked spaces. He collaborates with agencies like Building Use Studies Ltd and actively participates in exhibitions, symposia, and public debates worldwide.
He is affiliated with the Bartlett School of Architecture, The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, and has previously worked at the Architectural Association and Building Use Studies Ltd. His research aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
