Clara Calvert

Clara Calvert serves as a Chancellor's Fellow and Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Global Health at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh, within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Her academic work centers on epidemiological research in reproductive, maternal, and neonatal health, with significant contributions to understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perinatal outcomes through collaborations with the ALPHA network and iPOP consortium.

Calvert's research program is deeply rooted in global health epidemiology, with primary interests in maternal and child health, infectious diseases (especially HIV), and health systems responses during crises. She utilizes advanced methods such as cohort analyses, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses to generate evidence for policy and practice. Her work often addresses socioeconomic disparities and the interplay between violence and health outcomes.

Examination of her recent publications reveals a consistent theme of addressing critical gaps in maternal and neonatal health across diverse populations, from high-income settings like Scotland to resource-limited regions in Africa. Her studies frequently employ large-scale data and collaborative networks to enhance the robustness and generalizability of findings.

She was awarded the RSE Mary Somerville Medal in 2023, recognizing her outstanding contributions to public health research.

Calvert is committed to education, co-leading key modules for medical and public health students, and welcomes PhD supervision opportunities.
