Wilma Calvert

Wilma Calvert is an Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Nursing, with expertise in substance abuse research, health promotion in vulnerable populations, and community-based participatory research. Her work explores the effects of paternal substance use on offspring, health behaviors in low-income Black fathers, and the role of spirituality in health promotion.

Dr. Calvert’s research focuses on: (1) health promotion practices in marginalized communities, (2) risk and protective factors for adolescent health behaviors, (3) spirituality’s role in health decisions, and (4) community-university partnerships addressing methamphetamine use. Recent work examines health impacts of the Michael Brown unrest in Ferguson, MO.

Her publications span substance abuse epidemiology, community-based interventions, and adolescent health risk behaviors. Key trends include analyzing paternal alcohol use transmission, rural substance abuse programs, and culturally responsive health strategies.
