Dr. Christopher Wilson is an Associate Professor (Research) at Teesside University's School of Social Sciences and Law, specializing in Psychology. He leads the MIND Lab, established in 2024, which fosters collaborative research in cognitive neuroscience and applied decision-making. His work focuses on understanding risk-taking behaviors in domains like gambling, cybersecurity, and mental health, with a particular interest in how cognitive processes and psychopathologies influence these behaviors.
Wilson's academic journey includes a PhD from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (2010), and he is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. He teaches research methods and analysis across undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels and has supervised numerous PhD students. Notable external roles include serving on funding review panels for the Dutch Research Council (NWO), UKRI, and Swiss Science Foundation, as well as editorial roles for journals like Frontiers in Psychology.
His research has been funded by organizations such as The Academic Forum for the Study of Gambling and North Yorkshire County Council. Key themes in his work include virtual reality applications in visual perception, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data analysis, and the neurological underpinnings of economic decision-making. Recent projects explore social identification's role in gambling behavior and recovery processes from gaming addiction.
Wilson's scientific contributions include developing the 'Cobi fNIRS' R package for neuroimaging data processing and publishing on topics ranging from action observation in motor learning to the affect heuristic in cybersecurity. His awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society.
