Christopher McKenna is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at the University of Sunderland, with nearly 30 years of experience in higher education, having previously taught at Coventry University and Teesside University. He specializes in occupational therapy for individuals with learning disabilities, underpinning occupational therapy theory, and lifestyle management for Type 1 Diabetes patients.
His career includes developing pre-registration programs, leading interprofessional learning initiatives, and supervising students across BSc, MSc, and doctoral levels. He has contributed to international education exchanges in Malaysia, Sweden, Holland, and Switzerland, and collaborates with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, HCPC, and Health Education England.
Prior to academia, McKenna worked in the National Health Service as an occupational therapist, leading a team in transitioning individuals with learning disabilities from institutional to community-based care. He holds a Senior Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and is based at Pasteur 157, Sciences Complex, City Campus.
