Dr. Christopher Holmes is a Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at King's College London, within the Department of European & International Studies. His research focuses on the role of economic ideas in public policy and democracy, with expertise in Karl Polanyi's theories, financial regulation, and environmental governance. He has held lectureships at the University of Warwick and the University of Southampton, and earned his PhD from Warwick in 2010.
Research interests include the political economy of finance, alternatives to GDP in policy-making, and deliberative democracy methods. Notable projects include the Citizens’ Economic Council on the Cost of Living, funded by the Friends Provident Foundation and Barrow Cadbury Trust. He was awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2014-15) for work on post-2008 economic populism, culminating in his book Polanyi in Times of Populism.
Teaching includes modules on international economics for undergraduates. Holmes actively supervises PhD students in areas aligned with his research. His work has been featured in journals like Economy and Society and New Political Economy.
Awards include recognition for impactful research from King’s SSPP Impact Awards. Holmes collaborates with institutions like the International Political Economy Research Group and the Centre for British Democracy. He frequently engages in public discourse on economic policy and deliberative methods.
