Dr. Georgina Holmes is a Visiting Research Fellow at King's College London's Department of War Studies, affiliated with the School of Security Studies. She previously held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the University of Reading's Department of International Relations. Her roles include academic advisor to the British Army on UN Women, Peace, and Security agendas and co-chair of the BISA Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Working Group. Holmes holds a BA/MA in interdisciplinary gender studies from the University of Warwick and a PhD in International Relations from SOAS.
Her research focuses on gender and global security governance, peacekeeping practices, and security sector reform. A key project investigates how small/middle powers train and deploy peacekeepers, with fieldwork in Ghana, Rwanda, and the UK. She also examines how states like Rwanda and France address gender in foreign policy and international communications.
Her work bridges qualitative methodologies and feminist ethnography, emphasizing embodied practices in norm implementation. Recent publications include Women and War in Rwanda (2013) and articles in International Peacekeeping and Security Dialogue. Holmes has been recognized with the 2021 University of Reading Early Career Research Impact Prize.
Her advisory roles include engagement with policymakers on gender-responsive peacekeeping and pre-deployment training. She leads projects funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust, focusing on Rwanda’s peacekeeping identity and gender mainstreaming in military training. Holmes also contributes to Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal.
