Christopher Dingle is a Professor of Music at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University. He specializes in French Music, Music Criticism, and the works of Olivier Messiaen and Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. As Associate Director of Research, he leads initiatives like the French Music Research Hub and contributes to the Forum for 17th- and 18th-Century Music. His notable achievements include realizing the orchestration for Messiaen’s Un oiseau des arbres de Vie, premiered at the 2015 BBC Proms, and editing major works like The Cambridge History of Music Criticism (2019). Dingle is also a STEAMhouse Fellow and has organized prestigious conferences such as the 12th International Conference on Music Since 1900 (2022) and the Messiaen 2008 Centenary Conference.
His research, funded by the British Academy, spans musicology, performance practice, and historical editions. Dingle is an active public scholar, contributing to BBC Radio 3, Music & Letters, and Tempo. He has served on the jury for the BBC Music Magazine Awards multiple times and authored acclaimed biographies on Messiaen. His work bridges academia and performance, emphasizing historical context and contemporary relevance.
As a supervisor, Dingle guides research students in his areas of expertise. He plays piano, percussion, and bass guitar, reflecting his deep engagement with music beyond scholarly work.
