Ceri Owen

Ceri Owen is a Lecturer in Performance and Director of Performance at the University of Birmingham's Department of Music. A dual pianist and musicologist, their work bridges musicology, performance practice, and cultural studies. They specialize in intersections between music, identity, and performance, with a focus on British and Irish music from the late 19th to 20th centuries. As a collaborative pianist, Owen performs internationally at venues like the Wigmore Hall and BBC Proms, and collaborates with classical and Irish traditional musicians through the Of Aran Trio.

Education includes a BA (Oxford), MPhil (Cambridge), DPhil (Oxford), and postgraduate performance training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Previous academic roles include Lecturer at Oxford, Research Fellow at Cambridge, and Guildhall School Fellowship.

Research emphasizes practice-as-research methodologies, exploring Vaughan Williams’s compositions and cross-cultural musical practices. Notable publications include co-editing Vaughan Williams in Context (2024) and contributing to 19th-Century Music. Public engagement includes BBC Radio 3 collaborations and founding the Cambridge Song Festival (2019).

Teaching spans undergraduate/postgraduate performance modules, with expertise in performance assessment and curriculum development. Currently supervising three AHRC-funded PhD students through Midlands4Cities collaboration with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
