Professor Shirley Thompson is the Vice Principal (Music) at Birmingham City University’s Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She holds a BMus (First Class) from the University of Hull, a PGCE from Birmingham Polytechnic, and a PhD in Music from Hull. Her research centers on French Baroque music, particularly the works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, blending scholarly analysis with performance practice. Thompson has organized international conferences on Charpentier, Rameau, and Couperin, and serves on editorial boards for journals like the Journal for Seventeenth-Century Music.
Her academic roles include Director of Postgraduate Studies and Interim Principal. Key publications include a two-volume critical edition of Charpentier’s motets (2018) and edited works on Rameau’s operas (2023). Thompson actively contributes as a reviewer for music scores and recordings. Her work bridges academic research and performance, with editions featured in BBC Proms concerts.
Thompson’s expertise spans musicology, historical performance, and editorial scholarship. She advocates for Baroque music’s relevance through conferences, performance editions, and editorial leadership.
