Chris Tinker is a Professor of French at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies. He specializes in Cultural Studies, French media, and popular music analysis. His research focuses on media representations of gender, sexuality, nostalgia, and celebrity in France and Britain since the 1960s.
Education: BA, MPhil, PhD in French from the University of Birmingham. Previously taught at Lyon and Birmingham universities.
Research interests include posthumous celebrity narratives (e.g., Johnny Hallyday, Serge Gainsbourg), queer theory in French media, and the intersection of charity and music (e.g., Les Enfoirés concerts). He co-edited special journal issues on queer identities, video games, and nostalgia in French culture.
Leadership roles: Acting Head of the Intercultural Research Centre, Popular Culture and Inclusion theme lead, and former Head of Languages & Intercultural Studies department. Serves on editorial boards for Contemporary French Civilization and others.
