Olivier Julien is an Associate Professor at Sorbonne University's Faculty of Arts, where he serves as Head of the Master's degree program (since 2023) and Head of International Relations (since 2020). Specializing in the history and musicology of popular music, he teaches courses on recorded popular music analysis, Anglo-American popular music history, and the relationship between music and technology. His academic leadership extends to coordinating international programs including Erasmus exchanges and foreign language courses since 2010.
Julien earned his PhD in 1999 with a dissertation on the Beatles' sound, building on earlier experience as a songwriter and music columnist during the 1990s. His academic journey reflects a deep engagement with both practical music creation and scholarly analysis of popular music traditions.
His research primarily focuses on the relationship between popular musicians and technology, examining how phonography has conditioned popular music as a tradition. Specializing in Beatles studies and French popular music (particularly Serge Gainsbourg), Julien has pioneered interdisciplinary approaches that bridge musicology, cultural studies, and media analysis. His work on repetition in popular music, documented in the edited volume Over and Over: Exploring Repetition in Popular Music, demonstrates his innovative approach to understanding musical structures across genres and eras. Julien's scholarship consistently emphasizes how technological developments shape musical creation, performance, and reception.
His extensive publication record reveals a consistent trajectory from early work on recording technology's influence on rock music toward increasingly sophisticated analyses of cross-cultural musical phenomena. Recent publications show a deepening engagement with French popular music traditions, particularly through comprehensive studies of Serge Gainsbourg's international impact. His editorial work on specialized journal issues and book collections demonstrates leadership in shaping scholarly discourse around popular music studies, with particular attention to methodological approaches that integrate technical, historical, and cultural perspectives.
Julien's scholarly contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards including:
- ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research (2009)
- Best Historical Research in Recorded Rock and Popular Music (2009)
As an academic leader, Julien has supervised numerous doctoral candidates and master's students while serving on editorial boards for prominent journals including Volume! The popular music review, Popular Music History, and the Journal of Beatles Studies. His expertise is regularly sought by research funding bodies including the ANR (National Research Agency), CNL (National Book Center), and international organizations. His collaborative projects frequently involve interdisciplinary teams across Europe and North America, reflecting his commitment to international scholarly exchange.
Julien is an active member of the Institute for Research in Musicology (IReMus), contributing to research teams focused on "Editing, Restoring, and Valuing Musical Heritage" and "Performance, Musical Practices, and Recordings." His work bridges academic research with public engagement through frequent media appearances on French national radio and television, where he provides expert commentary on popular music history and contemporary developments.
