- Education: BA (Loyola Marymount), MA (UCLA), PhD (UCLA)
His research focuses on how music shapes and reflects social identities, particularly in historical contexts. Current projects examine music’s role in defining class, gender, and race in nineteenth-century America and the cultural history of the backbeat.
His publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, blending musicology with Marxist theory, dance studies, and cultural analysis. Recent work includes studies on the Beatles, Mendelssohn’s reception in post-Civil War America, and rhythm in rock drumming.
As a drummer, he performs with Halifax band The Sorrys, whose third album underscores his practical engagement with popular music traditions.
