Christina Wege is a Professor and Head of the Molecular and Synthetic Plant Virology Research Unit at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomolecular Systems (IBBS), University of Stuttgart. She holds academic roles including Academic Director at IBBS and coordinates the NanoBioMater Project House. Her research focuses on molecular plant virology, synthetic virology, and virus-derived biomaterials for bionanotechnology applications like biosensors and smart materials. She has authored over 150 publications and won the IMCS Best Paper Award. She teaches specialized modules in molecular biology, bionanotechnology, and bioethics, and advises students in interdisciplinary research projects.
Education: PhD (1998), Habilitation (2007) in Plant Virology at University of Stuttgart. Early career included postdoctoral work at John Innes Centre and Hamburg University.
Research emphasizes plant-virus interactions, viral nanocarriers, and engineered biomaterials. Recent work includes viral purification methods, biosensor development, and nanomaterials for biomedical and environmental applications. Collaborations span virology, materials science, and engineering disciplines.
Grants and projects include leadership in the NanoBioMater initiative (Carl-Zeiss Foundation), Baden-Württemberg Foundation projects, and international collaborations. Her labs develop biohybrid materials and functional nanostructures using viral templates.
