Dr. James Culver is a Professor at the University of Maryland, affiliated with the Department of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture and the Institute for Bioscience & Biotechnology Research. His research focuses on plant virology, plant-microbe interactions, and nanotechnology applications. He leads the Culver Plant Virology Laboratory, exploring viral mechanisms in plants and developing bionanomaterials for biomedical and energy storage applications. Culver holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from UC Riverside and has published extensively on viral pathogenesis, genome editing, and virus-based nanotechnology.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, University of California, Riverside
- M.S. in Plant Pathology, Oklahoma State University
- B.S. in Microbiology, Oklahoma State University
Research Interests:
- Plant virus-plant host interactions
- Nanotechnology applications in energy storage and biosensors
- CRISPR-Cas12a genome editing in plants
- Phytohormone regulation of viral infections
- Bionanomaterials fabrication using viral templates
Recent work highlights include developing antiviral/antibacterial textiles, optimizing CRISPR delivery in citrus cells, and studying phloem-based viral resistance mechanisms. His lab collaborates with engineers to create virus-templated supercapacitors and biosensors, bridging plant virology with materials science.
