Professor Christina Pantazis holds the position of Professor of Zemiology at the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol. Her work focuses on social harm, criminalisation, gender, racialisation, and poverty, with special emphasis on Female Genital Cutting/Mutilation (FGM) and climate/environmental protest policies. She critiques safeguarding practices that stigmatize marginalized communities and advocates for evidence-based policy reforms.
Her research interests include zemiology (study of social harm), the intersection of criminal law with social issues, and structural inequalities affecting minority groups. She has produced influential studies on FGM prevalence, policy impacts, and the criminalization of climate activism. Recent work highlights how anti-FGM policies often exacerbate social exclusion among Somali-heritage families in the UK.
Her articles analyze FGM safeguarding frameworks, climate protest criminalization, and the gendered/racialized dimensions of social exclusion. She challenges over-surveillance practices and advocates for more nuanced, community-centered approaches to social policy.
Prof. Pantazis collaborates with scholars in sociology and social justice, contributing to interdisciplinary dialogues about harm reduction and systemic inequality. Her work frequently appears in policy-oriented publications and informs international debates on human rights and social justice.
