Professor Aisha K. Gill, PhD CBE, is a leading academic in Criminology at the University of Roehampton, UK. She holds the title of Professor of Criminology and specializes in research addressing violence against women and girls (VAWG), particularly within Black, minority ethnic, and refugee communities globally. Her work focuses on domestic violence, coercive control, femicide, 'honour'-based violence, forced marriage, and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Education: PhD (University of Essex), MA (Distinction), and PGCHE in Higher Education. She has held academic positions since 2004, teaching courses like Gender Violence and Human Rights, Criminal Justice and Domestic Violence, and Gender, Hate and Violence.
Research interests span intersectionality, policing responses to gendered violence, and policy reforms. Notable projects include ESRC-funded studies on forced marriage protection orders and Home Office-funded research on family violence in racially minoritized and LGBTQI+ communities.
Awards include a CBE for services to tackling VAWG, ESRC’s Outstanding Impact Prize, and the Hind Rattan Award. She has advised UK governmental bodies, including the Home Office and Metropolitan Police, and chairs the Newham Asian Women’s Project (2004–2009).
Public engagement includes media commentary on BBC Woman’s Hour, Sky News, and contributions to documentaries like Predator: Catching The Black Cab Rapist. She advocates for systemic changes in policing and legal responses to gender-based violence, emphasizing accountability and intersectional approaches.
