Christian Unverzagt serves as Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture at the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, where he teaches graduate design studios and advises Dimensions, the student-produced architecture journal. He simultaneously leads M1DTW, a nationally recognized Detroit-based architecture studio specializing in adaptive reuse, commercial lifestyle spaces, and residential projects for clients including Signal-Return, Library Street Collective, and Samsung.
His educational background features a Master of Architecture with distinction from SCI-Arc (Los Angeles), a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan, and studies at CalArts and The Bartlett, UCL. Unverzagt actively engages with Detroit's urban fabric as a Lafayette Park resident, founding MiesDetroit.org to steward the neighborhood's design legacy while addressing contemporary conditions.
Research interests center on redefining architectural practice through alternative models, with emphasis on community-driven design, representation techniques, and adaptive reuse strategies. His work intersects creative industries with spatial innovation, particularly examining how architectural practice can evolve beyond traditional frameworks while responding to urban contexts like Detroit.
Publications reflect his dual academic-practitioner focus, exploring global practice models in Mumbai and operational strategies for small architectural studios. These works demonstrate consistent themes of contextual responsiveness and practice innovation across geographic and project scales.
Notable accolades include:
- Over a dozen AIA Michigan/Detroit Honor Awards
- NAHA for Best Salon Design in North America
- American Institute of Graphic Arts '50 Books/50 Covers' award
- 2023 Best of Practice Award from The Architect’s Newspaper (Small Firm, Midwest)
As educator and community member, Unverzagt mentors students through studio instruction and Dimensions journal production while advancing neighborhood stewardship via MiesDetroit.org. His Dimensions workshop (ARCH 466) serves as a critical platform for student publication and design discourse.
M1DTW operates as a living laboratory for alternative practice, with recent projects like Signal-Return at LANTERN (2024) demonstrating integrated approaches to creative workspace design and community engagement. The studio's recognition for adaptive reuse projects underscores its role in reshaping Detroit's architectural landscape through collaborative, context-sensitive interventions.
