Christina Hansen

Christina Hansen serves as a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning since 2013, concurrently operating as principal and partner of Detroit-based VolumeOne Design Studio—an award-winning international practice with projects across the United States, Europe, and China.

Her academic foundation includes studies at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, and a Master of Architecture (Dipl.-Ing.) from the University of Hanover, Germany. Professional experience spans from 1998 at firms including Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin and Hamilton-Anderson Associates in Detroit.

Hansen's expertise centers on architectural and urban design with emphases on housing, sustainable environmental strategies, integrated building systems, contemporary mixed-use typologies, and advanced construction methodologies. Her work consistently integrates urban-scale thinking with environmentally responsible approaches across diverse project scales.

Recognition includes the Build Magazine Award (2023) and First Prize in Invest South/West Chicago (2021), highlighting the studio's innovative contributions to socially sustainable urban development.

At the University of Michigan, Hansen teaches graduate design studios in housing, institutional design, regional environmental systems, and urban design through courses including ARCH 312 (Architectural Design I) and ARCH 562 (Architectural Design VI), with instruction scheduled through Fall 2025.

Co-founding VolumeOne Design Studio in 2011 with Lars Gräbner, Hansen has led notable projects such as House T and Urban Mansion Kindergarten, establishing the practice's reputation for context-sensitive solutions in housing, educational facilities, and large-scale urban competitions.
