معرفی
Marlon Blackwell serves as the E. Fay Jones Distinguished Professor at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, University of Arkansas, and holds the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor of Architectural Design position at Yale University. A practicing architect based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, he leads Marlon Blackwell Architects and has received the architecture profession's highest honor with the 2020 AIA Gold Medal.
His research centers on architectural design, adaptive reuse, and urban revitalization, with particular emphasis on transforming industrial structures into socially regenerative spaces. His studio work explores how preservation intersects with modernity, notably through projects like the Continental Motors complex in Detroit, where he investigates repurposing industrial relics for emerging 'wonderland economies' focused on social well-being, recreation, and cultural activities. His approach challenges conventional boundaries between old and new architectural languages while prioritizing economic and social regeneration of post-industrial landscapes.
Professor Blackwell's exceptional contributions have earned these major recognitions:
- 2020 AIA Gold Medal (highest AIA honor)
- 2020 SEC Professor of the Year
- 2015 DesignIntelligence '30 Most Admired Educators'
- 2016 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture
- 2019 American Academy in Rome Resident Fellowship
- 2018 National Academy of Design induction
- 2014 United States Artists Ford Fellowship
- 2017 Arkansas AIA E. Fay Jones Gold Medal
- 2012 American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Prize
As an educator, Blackwell has taught advanced design studios at both institutions since at least 2019, including Yale's Spring 2021 'Manufacturing Wonderland' studio focused on Detroit's Continental Motors complex, Spring 2022's 'Domestic Imaginaries', Spring 2023's 'Life/Craft: Architectural Behaviorology', and upcoming Fall 2025 Advanced Design Studio. His teaching synthesizes preservation theory, industrial urban space analysis, and 'wonderland economy' concepts, emphasizing how architectural intervention can revitalize economically distressed urban areas through creative reuse of existing structures.
