Dr. Christian Nefzger is a Group Leader at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the University of Queensland. His research focuses on cellular reprogramming and aging, particularly investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying cell fate transitions and age-related epigenetic changes. He leads a team of researchers and students, including PhD candidates and master’s students, exploring interventions to mitigate cellular decline in aging.
Dr. Nefzger’s work combines multiomics strategies to profile transcriptional and epigenetic changes during cellular transitions. Key projects include studying age-altered transcription factor networks, developing network reinforcement strategies to improve aged cell function, and leveraging multiomics data for novel transdifferentiation approaches. His lab has contributed to advancements in stem cell reprogramming, including insights into intestinal stem cell aging and the use of NAD precursors to restore hematopoietic stem cell function.
He has secured over $3.7 million in research funding, including grants from NHMRC and the Australian Government. Collaborators include institutions such as Monash University and the University of Western Australia. Dr. Nefzger is actively involved in academic service, serving on review panels and organizing stem cell research conferences. His contributions have been recognized with awards, including the best ERC presentation award in 2016.
His team’s research spans stem cell biology, epigenetics, and regenerative medicine, with a focus on translating discoveries into clinical applications, such as therapies for Parkinson’s disease. The lab also maintains collaborations in viral vector technology through the University of Queensland’s viral vector core.
