Prof. Dr. Christian Calliess is a full Professor of Public Law and European Law at Freie Universität Berlin since 2008, holding a Jean Monnet Chair. He specializes in European law, constitutional law, environmental law, and climate policy. His research emphasizes EU integration, climate governance, and the application of planetary boundaries in legal frameworks. He served as a legal advisor to the European Commission's European Political Strategy Center (EPSC) from 2015–2018.
His academic works include co-editing the Beck-Commentar zur EUV/AEUV and authoring Staatsrecht III – Völker- und Europarechtliche Bezüge des Grundgesetzes. He has held guest professorships in France and the USA and contributed to major legal reforms via roles like member of the German Government’s SRU (2008–2020) and advisor to the Constitutional Court on climate lawsuits.
Recent activities include organizing panel discussions on biodiversity law and EU reform, teaching courses on European constitutional law, and publishing on intertemporal freedom protection in climate litigation. Awards include the Jean Monnet Chair and jury membership for the Bundestag Science Prize.
