Chris Southcott is a Professor of Sociology at Lakehead University and serves as the UArctic Chair of Resources and Sustainable Communities. With over 35 years of experience, he has established himself as a leading researcher in northern community studies through extensive collaboration with Arctic communities.
Dr. Southcott's research focuses on the social and economic challenges facing northern communities, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to comparing regions of the circumpolar world. His work addresses critical issues including globalization, migration, community well-being, and the impacts of extractive industries on Arctic societies. He has particularly examined the role of social economy organizations in contributing to northern community development.
Among his significant research contributions, Dr. Southcott led the Social Economy Research Network for Northern Canada (SERNNoCa) from 2006 to 2011, followed by the Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic (ReSDA) program, which was awarded what was then the largest Arctic social science grant.
