Chris Chafe is the Duca Family Professor and Director of Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), where he also serves as Department Chair. An active composer, improvisor, and cellist, he develops music alongside computer-based research. His international appointments include the 2019 International Visiting Research Scholar at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Torino, and Edgard-Varèse Guest Professor at Technical University of Berlin.
Chafe's educational background includes:
- D.M.A. from Stanford University
- M.A. from the University of California, San Diego
- B.A. from Antioch College
Chafe's research focuses on computer music, networked performance, and digital audio synthesis. He pioneered CCRMA's jacktrip project for low-latency internet music collaboration, enabling live concerts across the globe. His artistic works span large-scale installations like the Earth Symphony and Brain Stethoscope (Gnosisong), plus site-specific pieces including PolarTide for the 2013 Venice Biennale, Tomato Quintet for Beijing's National Art Museum of China, and Sun Shot performed on ship horns in Newfoundland. He has created museum/gallery installations for over a decade through collaborations with scientists, artists, and medical professionals, exploring data 'musification' and interdisciplinary sonic phenomena.
As CCRMA Director, Chafe leads a research ecosystem securing funding for innovations in networked performance and digital synthesis. His projects have produced novel performance frameworks like the five-country United Nations concert (2009) and real-time latency research critical to global musical collaboration.
Chafe's primary research base is CCRMA at Stanford, with significant collaborative work at IRCAM (Paris) and The Banff Centre (Alberta), advancing real-time audio processing and internet-based artistic creation.
