Dr. Chris Beck is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology at Emory University, and Director of the Gateway STEM Course Project. His work focuses on improving laboratory pedagogy through course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), with a particular emphasis on microbiome studies using bean beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus). He collaborates nationally on the Bean Beetle Microbiome Project and chairs ESA's Four Dimensional Ecology Education Framework committee.
Education: B.S. from The College of William and Mary (1993), Ph.D. from University of Georgia (1999). Research interests include evolutionary ecology, microbiome dynamics, and science education reform. He edits Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology (TIEE) and actively participates in the Association for Biology Laboratory Education (ABLE).
His articles emphasize student autonomy in research, microbiome analysis tools, and CURE implementation strategies. Collaborations span institutions like Morehouse College. His efforts aim to enhance student self-efficacy and science identity through inquiry-driven learning.
