Dr. Cheryl Teelucksingh is a Professor and Department Chair of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a BA from Queen’s University, an MCS (Master of Computing Science) from the University of Calgary, and a PhD in Sociology from York University. Her research focuses on environmental justice, racialization, and community-based approaches to addressing social inequality in Canada. She has contributed to SSHRC and CIHR-funded grants and employs both qualitative and quantitative methods in her work.
Her research interests include exploring how environmental policies intersect with race, class, and urban development. Dr. Teelucksingh has published extensively on topics such as Black environmental experiences, urban forestry equity, and the role of community perspectives in shaping sustainable initiatives. Her recent articles highlight issues like recognitional justice in urban green spaces and the dismantling of systemic racial inequities in environmental governance.
Dr. Teelucksingh serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the Viessman Centre for Engagement and Research in Sustainability at Wilfrid Laurier University and holds editorial roles for journals like Local Environment and Environmental Sociology. She also contributes to the Environmental Justice Encyclopedia and the Sustainable Canadian Dialogues Network. Her teaching spans courses such as SOC 470 (Toronto: The Changing City) and ISS 8930 (Race and Ethnic Relations).
