Professor Charlotte Ross is a Professor of Italian and Gender Studies at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Christ Church College. She holds academic roles as Tutorial Fellow at Christ Church and Lecturer in Italian at St John’s College and Worcester College. Ross earned her BA (Hons) in Italian and English from Newnham College, Cambridge, MSt in Italian Studies from Balliol College, Oxford, and a PhD in Italian Studies from the University of Warwick. Previously, she served as Reader in Sexuality, Gender, and Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham and held visiting professorships at the University of Palermo (2015) and University of Toronto (2023).
Her research focuses on gender, sexuality, and embodiment in Italian culture, with a particular emphasis on LGBTQ+ communities and comparative cultural studies across Italian, French, and British contexts. Her work spans literary analysis, film/media studies, and ethnography, supported by grants from the British Academy, AHRC, and Leverhulme Trust. She co-edits the journal Italian Studies and has authored monographs such as Eccentricity and Sameness (2015) and Primo Levi's Narratives of Embodiment (2011). She supervises graduate students exploring interdisciplinary gender and sexuality topics in Italian literature and culture.
Her publications include over 20 peer-reviewed articles and edited collections, addressing queer theory, Italian literary history, and cultural discourse. Her research themes encompass comparative literature, modern Italian culture, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
