Charlie Walker is an Associate Professor in the Comparative Sociology of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on gender, social class, youth transitions, and postsocialist transformations in Russia and the former Soviet Union. He has held roles including Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2022-2023) and co-Editor-in-Chief of Sociological Research Online (2016-2020). His work combines social theory with area studies expertise, addressing methodological nationalism in Western social change theories.
Education: MA, MSocSci, PhD (University of Birmingham). Research interests include masculinities, care leavers, and youth transitions. Major projects include British Academy-funded studies on care leavers in Russia and work on working-class masculinities in Russia and Ukraine. He has presented to institutions like the World Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Research affiliations include the Centre for Eastern European and Eurasian Studies and Work Futures Research Centre. His recent publications explore gender resilience in care transitions, inclusive education in Eastern Europe, and post-pandemic welfare in Eurasia. Supervises PhD students in Sociology and Social Policy.
