Elizabeth J. King

Elizabeth J. King is an Associate Professor in Health Behavior and Health Equity at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and Director of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES). She holds affiliations with multiple institutes including the African Studies Center and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. Dr. King earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, MPH from Yale University, and BA from the University of Kansas.

Her research focuses on global health equity, particularly women’s health and HIV/AIDS care in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Key regions of study include Russia, Kazakhstan, Serbia, and Ukraine. Methodologically, she employs qualitative inquiry, mixed-methods, and community-based participatory approaches to examine issues like postpartum HIV care engagement, gender norms affecting health service access, and migrant health challenges. She also investigates globalization’s impact on public health policies in post-socialist societies.

Her teaching includes courses on global public health (HBHEQ617) and qualitative methods (HBHEQ638), emphasizing critical analysis of global health inequities and applied research strategies. Dr. King speaks Russian and Serbian, reflecting her extensive fieldwork experience in Eastern Europe. She leads the CREES, overseeing interdisciplinary research initiatives and policy engagement in Eurasian studies.
