Dr. Irina Mukhina is a Professor of History at Assumption College, located in Worcester, MA. She holds a Ph.D. in History from Boston College, along with an M.A. and B.A. from Boston College and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her research focuses on Soviet and post-Soviet history, with a particular emphasis on gender studies, ethnic minorities, and socio-economic transformations.
Dr. Mukhina teaches undergraduate courses including Russia since 1917, Soviet Russia: Honors, and Terror in the 20th Century, often integrating travel components to Central/Eastern Europe. Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title (2011) for Rural Women in the Soviet Union and Post-Soviet Russia and the Ida B. Wells Award for her doctoral research.
Her research explores themes such as Soviet deportation policies, gendered labor dynamics, and the emergence of informal economies in post-Soviet Russia. Recent publications analyze topics like self-employment trends, Soviet consumer culture, and the legacy of Stalinist policies. She has presented globally, including at the World Economic History Congress and the European Social Science History Conference.
Dr. Mukhina has secured grants from Assumption College and international organizations, supporting her research on Soviet minorities and pedagogical methodologies. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges history, sociology, and gender studies, offering critical insights into 20th-century Eastern European and Eurasian societies.
