Charles DiSalvo is the Woodrow A. Potesta Professor of Law at West Virginia University College of Law. He specializes in civil disobedience, legal history, and Gandhian studies, teaching one of the few U.S. law school courses on civil disobedience.
DiSalvo's research examines the intersection of law and social movements, particularly how civil disobedience drives legal and political change. His seminal work includes the biography M.K. Gandhi, Attorney at Law: The Man Before the Mahatma, which explores Gandhi's legal career in South Africa and its influence on his philosophy of nonviolent resistance.
Recent publications analyze civil disobedience in American history, climate activism, and democratic transitions. His work demonstrates how legal systems interact with social protest movements across different historical contexts.
