Alexander Livingston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government and Associate Director of the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University, with additional faculty affiliations in the American Studies and Religious Studies programs. His research bridges democratic theory, social movements, religion, and the history of political thought, specializing in American and African American intellectual traditions.
He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto (2010) and was a Social Science and Humanities Research Council postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University prior to joining Cornell.
Livingston's research examines nonviolence as both a strategic framework and a mode of political world-making. Current projects include a book manuscript on King's prophetic politics and an edited volume of Gandhi's writings.
