Mithi Mukherjee is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado, specializing in the legal, political, and cultural history of modern India. Her research focuses on colonialism, nationalism, law, human rights, gender, and postcolonial theory. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has authored influential works like *India in the Shadows of Empire: A Legal and Political History, 1774-1950* (Oxford UP, 2010), which examines the intersection of justice and colonial governance.
Her teaching includes courses such as 'Introduction to South Asian History since 1757' and 'Women in Modern India'. Research interests span constitutionalism, subaltern histories, and the legacy of empire in contemporary India. Over 20+ publications analyze topics like anti-colonial legal battles, Gandhi's nonviolence, and postcolonial diplomacy. She temporarily halted student recruitment for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Key contributions include analyzing how British legal frameworks shaped Indian nationalism and how anti-colonial movements reinterpreted justice. Her work bridges legal scholarship with broader historical and theoretical debates about empire's cultural and political impacts.
