Dr. Amrita Mukherjee is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Law within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She has been at Leeds since 2001, following a PhD from the University of Nottingham and prior degrees from Queen Mary College, University of London. Her research focuses on international law, human rights, postcolonial perspectives, and subaltern studies, particularly in relation to indigenous communities and UN human rights mechanisms.
Her academic roles include serving on the Law Society's Human Rights Committee (2015–2018) and leading initiatives on decolonizing education at the university level. She currently supervises three PhD students and teaches modules on International Law and Global Governance through Law.
Research interests include legal orientalism, universal jurisdiction, international criminal law, and the application of customary laws of Adivasi communities in Jharkhand, India. She contributes to the International Journal of Human Rights as an associate editor and is active in the Centre for Law and Social Justice and the Centre for Innovation and Research in Legal Education.
