Gaurav Mukherjee

Gaurav Mukherjee serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Law and Stuart F. Smith Teaching Fellow at the University of Connecticut School of Law. His academic journey includes an SJD from Central European University, LLM from Central European University, and BA-LLB from NALSAR University of Law in India.

Professor Mukherjee's research focuses on how constitutional law regulates positive rights such as housing and education, particularly examining tensions between state obligations to provide public goods and claims to autonomy by religious organizations and private entities. His work explores legal and institutional processes that mediate these conflicts, with special attention to how constitutional law structures relationships between the state and private institutions.

His scholarly output shows consistent focus on constitutional regulation of social rights, with recent publications examining state constitutional funding restrictions, the state action doctrine, and public law principles in education and social welfare contexts. His work demonstrates interdisciplinary engagement with human rights, constitutional theory, and social justice frameworks.

Professor Mukherjee has taught American constitutional law, education law, international human rights, and torts across multiple institutions including NYU Law, CEU, University of Verona, National Law School of India University, NALSAR University of Law, and Asian University for Women. He maintains active engagement with civil society organizations on educational equity issues and serves as Co-Chair of the Academic Committee of the Asian American Bar Association of New York. His academic service includes co-editing the International Association of Constitutional Law blog, serving as Assistant Editor at RevDem, and co-convening the IACL Research Group on Social Rights.
