Cathrine Thorleifsson is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo, and head of Norway's Government Commission on Extremism. She specializes in political anthropology, far-right movements, nationalism, and digital cultures. Her research spans Europe, the Middle East, and cyberspace, focusing on extremism, political violence, migration, and borders. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and has conducted fieldwork in Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Hungary, and the UK.
Thorleifsson's career includes roles at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX), DRIVE project on radicalization, and the Overheating ERC project. She has published widely on far-right mobilization, including books like Nationalist Responses to the Crises in Europe (2019) and Nationalism and the Politics of Fear in Israel (2015). Her work bridges academia and policy, advising governments and international organizations on extremism prevention.
Key research themes include transnational far-right networks, digital subcultures, and the intersection of nationalism with migration crises.
