Catherine Willmott is an Adjunct Associate Professor (Research) at Monash University's School of Psychological Sciences and Head of Concussion Innovation & Research at the Australian Football League (AFL). She leads the Mild TBI/Concussion stream at the Monash Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre (MERRC). Her work focuses on translational research in traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion rehabilitation, and biomarker discovery. She holds a BSci (Hons), MSc, and PhD in relevant disciplines.
Her research spans over 30 years, addressing cognitive deficits post-TBI and developing treatments to aid patients' return to daily activities. Key projects include accelerometry-based head impact studies, padded headgear efficacy evaluations, and the AFL Brain Health Initiative—a longitudinal study tracking player brain health across their careers. She collaborates internationally, engaging with institutions like the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and NHMRC-funded projects.
Willmott has secured over $8 million in research funding and holds an h-index of 17. She supervises honours students and advises on clinical guidelines for concussion management. Her contributions include validating diagnostic tools like the Westmead PTA Scale and developing the i-RECOveR interdisciplinary rehabilitation program for post-concussion symptoms.
Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and well-being. She serves as a reviewer for prominent journals and NHMRC, reflecting her expertise in clinical neuropsychology and neurotrauma.
