Catherine Ingrassia serves as Professor and Dean of the College of Humanities & Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin (1992) and specializes in British literature and culture of the long eighteenth century (1660-1820).
Her research interests span multiple interconnected fields including women's writing, particularly from the first half of the eighteenth century; the history of enslavement and captivity; women's life writing; the history of authorship and print culture; and the history of the London Stage. She has made significant contributions to our understanding of how gender, power, and representation intersect in eighteenth-century British literature.
Dr. Ingrassia's publications reveal a consistent focus on marginalized voices and overlooked aspects of eighteenth-century literature, particularly women writers and issues of captivity. Her recent book Domestic Captivity and the British Subject, 1660-1750 (2022) explores how captivity informed identity and human relationships for British subjects as represented in fictional texts from the period. Her work often examines the connections between literary production and broader social, economic, and political contexts.
