Dr. Gillian Dow is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Southampton, where she has taught since 2005. She serves as Head of Admissions and maintains strong affiliations with Chawton House Library, a research center for early women's writing where she was Executive Director (2014-2019). Her academic background includes a degree in French and English from the University of Glasgow and graduate studies at the University of Oxford funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Snell Exhibition.
Her research explores eighteenth-century literature, translation history, and cross-channel cultural exchange between Britain and France (1780-1830), with special focus on European women writers and Jane Austen's global legacy. She co-created the FutureLearn course Jane Austen: Myth, Reality and Global Celebrity and leads projects funded by Leverhulme Trust and Bosack Kruger Foundation examining British women translators (1750-1830).
Current PhD students under her supervision investigate women's writing in the long eighteenth century, legal coverture practices, and cross-channel education debates. She regularly examines doctoral theses on Romantic-era culture and translation studies.
