Katie MacLean is a doctoral researcher at the University of Stirling within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, specifically affiliated with the Division of Literature and Languages. She is funded by the Carnegie Trust and supervised by Prof. Katie Halsey and Dr. Michael Shaw.
Education:

Research Interests: Katie’s work focuses on queer performance and adaptation in literature, particularly examining Jane Austen’s theatrical legacy and its intersection with gender studies, 19th-century British literature, and theatrical-to-literary transitions. Her project, Jane Austen on Stage: 1782–2023, includes analysis of private and public theatrical practices in Austen’s era.
Awards & Recognition:
- 2024 Jane Austen Scholar-in-Residence (Goucher College, Maryland) with a $2500 research grant from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies
- Chawton House Visiting Fellowship (2024) for studying Austen’s original manuscripts
- 2024 Keats-Shelley Essay Prize runner-up for work on queerness in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Frankenstein
- Dee-Amy Chinn Prize for Gender & Feminist Studies (for her MRes dissertation Queer Adaptation: The Lives of Nineteenth-Century Female Writers Reimagined)
Professional Activities: She serves as Deputy Editor for the postgraduate-led Romance, Revolution & Reform Journal and as an SGSAH Doctoral Researcher Committee representative. She also works as a Fundraising Intern at Glasgow Zine Library, supporting grant applications and corporate sponsorships for Glasgow Zine Fest 2025. Her roles include coordinating the 2024 Faculty of Arts and Humanities PGR Conference on the theme of Change and Disruption.
