Cate Latham

Cate Latham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Design + Merchandising at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of the Arts. She holds a cum laude degree from VCU's Fashion Department and has professional experience in costume design for TV, film, theater, and the Richmond Ballet. Since 2016, she has taught 3D apparel design and sustainable production methodologies at VCU, emphasizing hands-on training and career development for students.

Latham founded Van Herten Outerwear in 2014, a brand specializing in waxed canvas and leather designs featured in the Wall Street Journal and RVA Magazine. Her academic work focuses on sustainable apparel production, supported by three research grants obtained during her tenure at VCU. She prioritizes empowering students to navigate the fashion industry through personalized career guidance.

Her teaching integrates industry-relevant skills with ethical practices, reflecting her commitment to both innovation and environmental responsibility in fashion.
