Cary Moody, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He is also a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where his research focuses on the pathogenesis of human papillomaviruses (HPV).
Dr. Moody's research interests span several key areas in virology and cancer research:
- Pathogenesis of human papillomaviruses (HPV)
- Viral life cycle and epithelial differentiation
- Cell cycle regulation during viral infection
- DNA damage response in viral replication
- Epigenetic regulation of viral genomes
- Suppression of anti-viral innate immune responses by HPV
- Mechanisms of HPV-induced carcinogenesis
Analysis of Dr. Moody's publication record reveals a strong focus on HPV pathogenesis, particularly the mechanisms by which high-risk HPV types manipulate cellular processes to facilitate viral replication and contribute to cancer development. His work spans molecular virology, cell biology, and cancer research, with recent publications addressing scientific discourse in virology as well as more specialized research on HPV mechanisms.
Dr. Moody has received several prestigious awards and fellowships:
- National Institutes of Health K99 Pathway to Independence Award Recipient (2008-present)
- American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship Recipient (2006-2008)
- National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Fellowship Recipient (2005-2006)
- Katten-Muchin-Rosenman Travel Scholarship Award, Northwestern University (2006)
- UNC Lineberger developmental research grant
Dr. Moody leads the Moody Lab, which investigates how high-risk HPVs hijack cellular machinery to complete their life cycle in differentiated epithelial cells. His research has been supported by multiple NIH grants, and he has mentored graduate students through their dissertation research, contributing to the training of the next generation of virologists.
The Moody Lab currently focuses on three major projects: 1) The role of cellular DNA damage response in the viral life cycle, 2) Epigenetic regulation of HPV replication, and 3) Mechanisms by which HPV suppresses anti-viral innate immune responses through manipulation of apoptotic caspases.
